Harassment in transport

Within the framework of the implementation of the Gender policy of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo, Women Break The Silence has initiated jointly with the municipality the first campaign to fight and prevent sexual harassment, discrimination, violence based on the registration in public transport, called "Travel without fear", and this in the continuity of the "safe city" project of the municipality.

What you need to know about harassment in transportation

Women Break The Silence has launched this awareness-raising camp in the capital following countless incidents of violence against women, most of them on buses. we are talking here about an anti-harassment camp in collaboration with the AUC, as part of the implementation of the gender policy.

Is the harassment trivialized?

in 2019, according to a survey conducted in the city of Antananarivo, 40% of cases of harassment are found on public transport in the capital. Thanks to a collection of upstream emissions that we have carried out, we were able to meet that harassment in transport is very common and especially completely trivialized.

Sensigilise the greatest number

Male and female travellers will be informed of trained and sensitized staff through stickers on buses, taxis, bus shelters and partner establishments.
A media campaign (social networks, radio, press, TV) is also put in palce to spread the messages of the campaign.

How do we fight?

To make everyone feel free and safe during their journeys, we have put in palce with the urban municipality of Antananarivo since March 8, 2022 a 9-month program including training- Awareness raising in the fight against GBV and the fight against discrimination to:
• the drivers and receivers of more than 4000 buses of the capital
• the municipal police
• taxi drivers
• the City Council’s Transport and Urban Mobility Directorate (which will collect the palintes)
• locks and pointers in charge of regulating transport
